Notes from Quarantine – Day 3

Day 3 was pretty uneventful. I didn’t get out for a walk and because I stupidly forgot to buy a universal adapter while walking around Istanbul Airport for 9 hours, the ‘juice’ on my phone and computer was running low.

My friend Kate has asked me to describe the experience of flying during the Covid 19 pandemic so I will oblige here. I have flown with Turkish Airlines before so I am able to make a comparison.

Upon boarding we were provided with an amenities pack that contained a mask, hand sanitizer, and antiseptic wipes.

The flight was only about half full, if that. There were more people on the Istanbul to Toronto leg than on the Singapore to Istanbul. Social distancing was not a problem.

The flight attendants wore their normal uniforms with the addition of masks. The passengers are asked to wear their masks all the time except when eating or drinking. Only once did I hear a flight attendant reminding someone to pull up their mask.

On the subject of eating and drinking, meals were boxed lunches of sandwiches, small pieces of cake, nuts, and a juice box. Except for bottles of water, no drinks were offered including coffee or tea.

It struck me that the flight attendants spent more time cleaning/disinfecting the toilets than they did serving passengers. There was no inflight magazine and no on board duty free shopping.

The temperature on board both planes was very cold. I don’t know if this has anything to do with Covid 19 but I don’t recall being cold on the flight I took with Turkish Airlines in the past. In fact, I don’t recall ever being that cold on an airplane before.

Stay healthy!
